Asti is the center of the beautiful Monferrato hills area.
Asti was founded under the name Hasta during the Roman era, near the Tanaro River. Its most significant historical period was the Middle Ages, when it became an important commercial city and a major banking center, thanks to its strategic geographic position between Genoa and Northern Europe.

Politically, Asti became a free commune. At that time, it was three times larger than Turin and controlled a vast surrounding territory. It was also a prominent financial center. The many towers built by its wealthy families gave the city the nickname “the city of a hundred towers.”

Its historical importance can still be admired today in its medieval historic center and in its traditional medieval celebrations, such as the famous horse race Palio di Asti.
