Alba was founded under the name Alba Pompeia during the Roman era, near the Tanaro River. Its most significant historical period was the Middle Ages, when it became an important commercial city (particularly renowned for textiles) thanks to its strategic location close to the sea, the port of Genoa, and France.
The wealthy families of the time were responsible for the construction of the medieval fortified houses and the many towers that can still be admired in the city today. Alba’s medieval historic center is small and charming, offering a pleasant atmosphere for a stroll. Its boutiques and shops selling local specialties are of high quality.
Although a small town, Alba is internationally renowned as the capital of wine, truffles, and hazelnuts.
A guided tour of the historic center may include tastings or be combined into a full-day experience with visits to hazelnut producers, wineries, or truffle hunting experiences.
